Spirit of the Shaman
Connecting with your Spirit Guides
Probably the most difficult part of becoming or indeed being a Shaman is finding your spirit guide. The first question is always where do I start?
There are many techniques, and some of use are privaledged to have their guides contact them. This can happen in a variety of ways, usually at those times just before you go to sleep, or when you wake early in the morning before drifting back to sleep again. In this state you become more aware, and it is a time when lucid dreams occur.
A lucid dream is one in which the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming. In a lucid dream, the dreamer can actively participate in and manipulate imaginary experiences in the dream environment. Lucid dreams can seem real and vivid.
A lucid dream can begin in one of two ways. A dream-initiated lucid dream starts as a normal dream, and the dreamer eventually concludes it is a dream, while a wake-initiated lucid dream occurs when the dreamer goes from a normal waking state directly into a dream state, with no apparent lapse in consciousness.
Your mind can be trained to experience lucid dreaming by asking yourself if you are awake all through the day. It becomes a habit, so that when you are asleep you keep on asking am I awake? Eventually control can be gained within the dream state.
This trechnique can take months, if not years to master.
Another way of being contacted by your spirit guide is to have a vision during your waking state. To some people this is more like day dreaming, when your mind shifts from whatever you have been concentrating on. It is defined as 'a visionary fantasy, especially one of happy, pleasant thoughts, hopes or ambitions, imagined as coming to pass, and experienced while awake'.
Whilst we all day dream, and some of us can experience lucid dreams, there are other techniques of which we can establish who are main spirit guide is.
Dowsing is one of the best ways of achieving this.
To most people the word dowsing congers up a vision of someone with a large 'Y' shaped twig walking across a field in the sheach for hidden water. Dowsing is actually quite an art and is defined as 'The ability to use a Natural Sensitivity which enables to know things we cannot know by the use of the day to day brain or by learning, by experience, or by the use of the five physical senses.'
For most people the 'twig' has been replaced by a pendulum. Pendulums consist of a pointed piece of crystal suspended from a small chain. The user becomes at one with the energies of the crystal, as it is held by the end of the chain and moves of its own accord.
For the purposes of trying to define exactly what shape and form your spirit guide has taken, there are some specially designed dowsing charts, and a selection of dowsing pendulums available here:
